Vast and varied, the transit systems in New York City are complex and numerous.
Ownership of the various transit systems is equally complex to the point it would require a separate article. To cut down confusion I am combining that information here in a simplified way. Toward the bottom of this post, look for more information on the topic.
Also noteworthy is the high percentage of New York City metro residents that use more than one transit system in a single trip. For example, many outer Burroughs residents take a bus to get to a subway station then ride a subway into the city. With an average commute time of 39 minutes each way, New Yorkers have developed a transit culture that also deserves its own post.
